When it comes to plumbing problems, few are as common as the clogged drain. From stopped-up sinks and sluggish showers to backed-up toilets and overflowing floor drains, clogs can occur just about anywhere. And when they do, they can really put a damper on your day. Clogs can lead to major messes and even structural damage when not attended to, so it’s important to contact a trusted plumber at the first sign of trouble. At LBA, we are here for all of your Kansas City drain cleaning needs.
Common Causes of Clogged Drains
We’ve seen a lot of clogged drains in the many years we’ve spent working in Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, Mission, and the surrounding communities throughout Johnson County, Kansas. While there have been a few things that surprised us – including cellphones – we’ve found that most clogged drains are caused by a few common things:
Grease Food scraps Hair Soap buildup “Flushable” hygiene products Excess toilet paper Foreign objects, including toys, jewelry, etc. Damaged pipes
The majority of bathroom drain blockages occur when hair bonds to soap scum on the walls of drain pipes. The soapy hairball builds over time, reducing water flow. You can buy a tool to easily remove hair from your drain; it looks like a dipstick with thorns on it and costs less than $10. You can also prevent hair clogs by installing a hair strainer drain-cover to catch hair before it travels down the drain.
For a toilet, sink, tub, shower or laundry drain, the typical plumber cost is $100 to $275. The typical cost of snaking a mainline is between $150 and $500. The cost of renting a drain snake ranges from $30 to $80 a day.
A typical rule of thumb is to have your home's sewage pipes cleaned every 18 to 24 months. That may be tough to recall, but consider it a year and a half to two years. Getting your main drain cleaned at least once every two years helps prevent major clogs and blockages that could cause permanent damage to your pipes.
First, you should immediately stop using water. With nowhere else to go, the water will just continue to back up into your home. Remember, this isn't pure water, so if at all possible, refrain from using water until the clog is cleared. If you don't have a lot of plumbing knowledge, clearing the blockage by yourself will be difficult. It will include running a professional-grade plumbing snake, also known as an auger, down your mainline until the obstruction is removed. If you’re not confident in your ability to do this yourself, have a licensed plumber take care of it for you.
Signs of a Clogged Main Sewer Line
When the water stops flowing completely, you know you have a totally blocked drain. In most cases, though, the problem builds up slowly before finally clogging the drain completely. Pay close attention to these signs and have your drains cleaned at the first sign of trouble:
Smelly drains Drains that flow slower than usual Water backing up in unusual places when draining, such as water backing up in the tub when you flush your toilet Gurgling toilet
What to Do When You Have a Clogged Drain
Thinking about reaching for a bottle of chemical drain cleaner? Think again. Those products contain harmful chemicals that are detrimental to your health and cause significant damage to your plumbing pipes. Try pouring baking soda down the drain followed by white vinegar. This causes a chemical reaction that bubbles and fizzes and is often powerful enough to break up clogs. If that doesn’t work, you can try using a plunger – just be prepared for a mess.
