Proper Installation VS Cutting Corners

There is no shortage of technicians in the industry who will gladly install a new system for you as a side job. They’re looking for extra money so they advertise on Craigslist. They are seeking individuals looking to cut corners.

But beware: “you get what you pay for” should be their motto.

Typically, a heating and cooling system installation done at a discount price will not be tailored to your specific home and comfort needs. The installer will get your new system installed as quickly and as cheaply as possible.

But you’re either going to pay for a proper installation up front or during the life of your system. A discount installation never yields the life expectancy of the unit that the manufacturer recommends.

If your system is slated to last 10 to 15 years but the technician neglects to help you properly register the unit, you’re out of luck when a system fails. Think about what happens when your compressor fails at year number nine. With proper registration, it gets replaced for free and you get another 10 years out of the system. Improper registration means you’re left with only the 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. That means you’re paying $2,000 on a compressor or, worse, an entirely new system.

The right technician will also know the difference between installation materials that could either save you heartache or cost you money in the future. When installing a system, professional technicians know that using a ¾ inch PVC pipe and a clear trap eliminate clogging. Many sub-par installations use vinyl tubing, which is porous. It catches dirt and debris that eventually clogs the system. That prevents the water from coming through and eventually it backs up into the system and either floods your basement or floods the components inside the furnace.

When it’s time to install a new heating and air conditioning system, it always pays to use a certified, licensed installation contractor who will make sure you’re getting the right system for your home and make sure it’s installed properly.
